The Basilica of Valère is a heritage site of international significance. From the Middle Ages onwards, Valère was the seat of the Chapter of the Cathedral. The oldest dwellings date back to the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, and fortified walls with corner towers were built around 1300. 

The building combines 12th-century Romanesque elements with later additions: 13th-century elevations, 15th-century painted decorations, and 17th-century Baroque choir stalls and altars.

Major restoration work was carried out between 1986 and 2022, which is documented in the Society for Swiss Art History's volume on Valère: Les Monuments d’art et d’histoire du canton du Valais VIII. Le bourg capitulaire et l’église de Valère à Sion (2022)
